Pfizer vaccine creator: Life could be back to normal late next year

Life could return to a pre-coronavirus status quo by next winter, a co-developer of Pfizer’s vaccine candidate told the BBC.

“If everything continues to go well, we will start to deliver the vaccine end of this year, beginning (of) next year,” Ugur Sahin, co-founder and chief executive of BioNTech, said on the BBC’s “The Andrew Marr Show” on Sunday. “Our goal is to deliver more than 300 million of vaccine doses until April next year, which could allow us to already start to make an impact.”

Sahin added that some major logistical hurdles remain even if the vaccine is ready for development by year’s end.

“This winter will be hard. So, we will not have a big impact on the infection numbers with our vaccine in this winter,” he told Marr.

Sahin also said it would be “absolutely essential” to achieve full immunization by next fall, adding that he is “confident that this will happen because there are a number of vaccine companies helping us to increase the supply and so that we could have a normal winter next year.”

“So, I’m very confident that transmission between people will be reduced by such a highly effective vaccine – maybe not 90 percent but maybe 50 percent,” he said. “But we should not forget that even that could result in a dramatic reduction of the pandemic spread.”

Sahin’s comments came shortly after Anthony FauciAnthony FauciWhitmer responds to Atlas: I won’t ‘be bullied into not following reputable scientists’ US sees 1M new coronavirus cases in one week Cuomo threatens to sue Trump administration over vaccine distribution plan MORE, the top infectious diseases expert in the U.S., said it was doubtful the virus could be fully eradicated but “certainly, it is not going to be a pandemic for a lot longer because I believe the vaccines are going to turn that around,” according to CNBC.

Pfizer’s vaccine candidate was 90 percent effective in preventing the virus in early trials. On Monday morning, Moderna announced its own candidate was 94.5 percent effective.
