Trump responded by labeling de Blasio the “worst mayor” in the country.

“We’re talking about what the people of New York City are feeling and what we need,” de Blasio told reporters assembled inside Trump’s midtown Manhattan high-rise.

The New York City mayor and president-elect spoke by phone Monday, a conversation de Blasio described as “respectful.”

But Trump’s hometown has been on edge since he won the presidential election last Tuesday, with multiple anti-Trump protest marches.

“We have to recognize that all over this country, the more disruption that’s caused peacefully … the more it will change the trajectory of things,” de Blasio said this week in a radio interview. “We need to hold Trump accountable for anything he does that encourages hate and division.”

Trump has questioned the sincerity of the protesters, accusing them of being paid and blaming the media for fueling the demonstrations.

The mayor is also facing practical challenges governing the city that Trump calls home.

The Secret Service and New York City Police Department are reportedly negotiating security measures to protect Trump Tower, where the president-elect lives and works.

One contentious proposal is whether to shut down a portion of Fifth Avenue — a busy thoroughfare where the building is located — while Trump is in town.
