Didier Deschamps: “I’m going to give Mbappé a lot of freedom”

Speaking to Téléfoot before France’s World Cup opener against Australia on Tuesday, Didier Deschamps spoke about the role that he intends for Paris Saint-Germain’s superstar attacker Kylian Mbappé on the left side of a front three (which he’s been testing in training).

The France manager admitted to Téléfoot’s Fred Calenge that Mbappé is a player “who needs freedom” and that he will be willing to give the France striker the ability to express himself and play a more free role on the left hand side. However, Deschamps insisted that the winger would have “defensive responsibilities” but less than those behind him in midfield and in defence.

Didier Deschamps lined up with a front three in training, with Mbappé playing on the left of Giroud in the centre, with Ousmane Dembélé taking up a wide role on the right wing. This should be the expected line up against Australia, with the injury of Karim Benzema all but confirming Olivier Giroud’s starting place at the World Cup.
