“We would like to highlight that this agreement will guarantee the survival of Cercle Brugge in professional football… Cercle and Monaco share the ambition to promote Bruges as quickly as possible into the first division with a stable future there.”

When Monaco released a communiqué last month about having made a formal offer to buy the club, they had the following to say on their reasoning behind doing so:

“This project is part of the AS Monaco development strategy in relation to young talents. The club will benefit from the savoir-faire of the “Belgian school” whilst respecting the traditions and values of Cercle Brugge, a historic Belgian football club. This project will allow young players from the Monaco academy to take an extra step in their progression from the reserve team to the first team squad. The first aim will be to do everything we can to take the club back to the 1st division of Belgian football.”
